STAR Guide Intern Job Description
Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, is a unique location for an exciting internship opportunity offered by ULTRA Teen Choice.
Goal of the internship: To provide training in implementing the ULTRA Teen Choice program, plus opportunities for leadership development, personall growth, and community service.
Capitol Hill offers a unique location where the US Capitol, the Supreme Court, and the Smithsonian Museums are within walking distance. STAR (Students Teaching Abstinence & Responsibility) Guides will also have the opportunity to participate in community activities, including working with local service organizations, such as the Kiwanis Club.
Intern Responsibilities:
1. Give classroom presentations(Free Teens & others)
2. Lead ULTRA Teen Choice Service Club meetings for middle school youth, and assist with high school Club meetings.
3.. Assist with public relations and media outreach
4. Assist with fundraising activities
Skill Training Provided for Interns:
1. How to give classroom presentations
2. How to lead ULTRA Teen Choice Service Club meetings
3. How to do public relations and media outreach.
4. How to conduct fundraising activities.
How the internship will do the following:
Provide Skill Training:
Interns will learn how to implement a directive abstinence program in public schools in Washington, DC. Skills learned will include giving classroom presentations, leading abstinence based club meetings, doing public relations work, including the opportunity to work on the ULTRA Teen Choice website, and to create audio and video materials for public education, and leaning how to fundraise for a nonprofit organization.
Provide Leadership Training and Foster Personal Growth:
Interns will be promoting abstinence until marriage, an essential part of character development and personal growth.. Furthermore, they will be serving as a role model for other youth by helping them to remain abstinent. A monthly Parent/Teacher/Student Advisory committee meeting provides further opportunities to guide the further development of ULTRA Teen Choice. Interns will work with and help direct the efforts of other college students serving as STAR Guide Interns for the ULTRA Teen Choice program. We currently have nine STAR Guides, mostly from Howard University in Washington, DC.
Educate the interns about the mission and vision for ULTRA Teen Choice:
The vision for ULTRA Teen Choice was cast in 1997 when co-founders Richard and Stacey Urban began teaching directive, abstinence based sexual health education in Washington, DC public schools. Eastern Senior High School was the site of the first ULTRA Teen Service Club. Interns will learn this history, and will have further opportunities to understand the importance of sexual abstinence until marriage for personal development.
ULTRA Teen Choice Mission Statement:
To provide education, peer counseling and clubs for youth that will empower them to be successful in life by choosing abstinence from sex outside of marriage and abstinence from drugs, alcohol and tobacco. We provide services to schools and youth serving organizations, including services by college students from nearby universities who support an alcohol, drug, and sex free lifestyle.
Time Period, Stipend and other Accommodations
Time the internship is available:
January 8, 2007 to June 9, 2007, and
August 2007 to early June 2008
Room and Board is available for qualified accepted interns.
Stipend:
$50 per week.
